Infographic: Incarcerated Adults in the United States
Apr 2017

How do literacy and numeracy skills of incarcerated adults compare with the general U.S. household population? And do education and work programs in prison help those who participate?

We use data from the 2014 Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) report, Highlights from the U.S. PIAAC Survey of Incarcerated Adults: Their Skills, Work Experience, Education, and Training, to answer those questions and more. This report sampled incarcerated adults in both U.S. state and federal prisons, and compared the results with the general household adult population sample.
